Listed on the Inventory of Historical Monuments, and highlighted amidst Bordeaux’s « Vignobles et Chais en Bordelais » , « Vignobles & Découvertes » and « Best of Wine 2017 » labels, the Château de Portets presides majestically over the Garonne with its stately façade, Renaissance architecture, and its majestic terrace elevated over the vineyard.
This wonderful site offers many enticements for wine tourism that are begging to be explored, a savory combination of river, heritage site, vineyard, and proximity along the Bordeaux Wine Route in Graves and Sauternes. The Château de Portets’ location on the banks of the Garonne provides a unique opportunity for it to provide its tourism activities by boat, boat tourism being a rapidly expanding area. Additionally, it is directly parallel to the Bordeaux Wine Route in Graves and Sauternes to which the château subscribes. The château de Portets is already active in wine tourism. As of 2012, it is a regular stop for organized visits by bus (Bordeaux Tourist Office and Sauternes Graves Tourist Office), as well as river cruise visits via “Gens d’Estuaire”.
Situated in the heart of the Graves Vineyards, 25 km from Bordeaux, benefiting from direct access to the river and the route des vins, le Château de Portets was able to develop its wine tourism possibilities with the realization in 2015 of a project including several reception buildings. A renovation of 400m² provides a scenography space, a seminar hall, a wine tasting room, catering facilities as well as a boutique while conserving a unique circuit through the cellars. These reception areas are adapted for a wide variety of visitors, individuals, groups and even school trips. The buildings have all been retrofitted with handicap access for visitors with mobility limitations.
An additional remodel of a larger space called l’Orangerie (200m²) permits the chateau to accommodate larger seminars.
Additionally, the Château de Portets will continue to organize various special events as it has in the past years. For example, popular summertime concerts such as the « Graves International Musical Concerts » of Baroque festivals or, Historical reenactments of Napoléon and Joséphine’s visit to the Château de Portets as in July of 2014. On April 2015, Château de Portets welcomed the first Southern Gironde Garden show in help from the association FloriGraves.
